General Blog Entry Question (Becoming Madame Mao)

 1. One character that I admire the most is madame mao becuse even thought that her mother and her have been kicked out of the house and they end up at her grandparents house and she is abandoned later on by her mother, she does not give up. It seems that one tragedy after another happens in her life yet she still is positive.  One dream that she has is to become an actress.  She doesnt give up on that dream because she belives in herself and even though people make comments at the auditions that she goes to she decides to ignore them even though they hurt her feelings.  In order to reach her dream she goes to auditions an has poor living conditions.   One primary characteristic that madame mao has is not giving up and I think that she is like this because she truly belives in herself an what she can do.

Why does Vikas swarup choose the name Ram Mohammad Thomas? for his protagonist?
I think that he chooses the name of Ram Mohammad Thomas to show culture in India and I also think that he thought that name was interesting  and so that they wouldn't confuse him with a Christian and that is why his name got changed, and also he feared that something would happen to his church because if he would have left him with that name people would have thought christianity was taking place there.

How do you think Ram changes, if at all, during his eighteen years? Which journey had the greatest impact on him , either for better or worse?

He learns a lot from life experiences that happened to him and that med him change to the way that he is at the end of the novel.  I think  that the journey that had the greatest impact on him was when he visited the taj mahal and became a tour guide because he had a good life experience and he met a lot of new people and he made money that helped  him get by.

Considering he belives hes already murdered two people why is Ram unable to kill Prem Kumar?

I think that Ram is unable to kill Prem Kumar because he fears that since he is a famous person that comes out in tv, he will get caught right away, and he will get in trouble.  I also think that he thinks that he is lucky that he did not get caught when he killed that guy and he decides not to risk it at all because he realizes that his life is good up until right now.

Several characters especially Ram and Salim, are big movie fans.  are movies simply a form of escapism or do they carry a more significant role in the culture?
I think that movies in the Indian culture have a more significant role.  The movies actually show things that happen in real everyday life for example the things that characters do.  Even though there are famous actors and actresses their life still has problems showing things that happen in their culture.

3. By reading this book what did you discover that could help you outside of school?
What I discovered is that sometimes things happen that make you  realize that  your dreams can actually be
accomplished.  For example when Ram wins the one million rupees, he feels really different because he feels that he can do many things now that he wouldn't have been able to do, and he was tired of being a waiter, he wanted other different things in his life, but he feels really depressesed when the money is taken  away from him, he feels that millions of dreams were taken away from him, but still he did not give up, and he kept moving on with his life trying to make the best of it.

5. What are Ram's ambitions in life?  why does he tell  Prem Kumar he doesn't know how he is going to spend the billion rupees?
I think that Ram's ambitions in life are to become someone that can accomplish everything he has ever dreamed of.  He wants his dreams to come true, he does not want people to think that he is just a waiter that cant do anything, that does not have dreams about what he wants to do in life.  I think that Ram tells Prem Kumar that he does not know how he is going to spend the billion rupees because he had never had that much money and he can't believe that he won all that money, so now he is even questioning himself about what he will do, because he was caught by surprise that events in his life would help him answer the questions in "Who wants to be a millionaire?" .

 Question number 2:
I think tha the woman that keeps appearing to Ram is his mother. I think that he keeps seeing her because he misses his mom, and he would like to know how having a mom is like, I think that he felt that his mom abandoned him because she left him with father Timothy, and he feels alone.  I think that his mom feels bad that she left him when he was little and I also think that now she is kind of regreting what she did in the past.

Mood:  How do you feel when reading the book? Why did you feel this way?
When reading Q&A I feel interested because every question that was asked to Ram, the answer has to do with something that happened in his life, and I think that is interesting because people dont know that that is the way that he won the million dollars. Yet again this is why he is in the big mess that he got into trouble because people think that he somehow cheated.  I think that the most interesting thing about the book is that even though Ram did not go to school, he could still answer the questions.

"Seven"
3. Contrast Enrique’s life in the United States with the life he left behind.
When he was in Mexico he was  not with his mother he felt alone and he got into problems, did drugs and caused problems with the family.  When he reunites with his mother in the United States he is still doing some of these things but as time goes on he realizes that he needs to stop.  I think that being with his mother changed him, at first he was still being bad but as time goes on I think that he realizes that he should be really thankfull that he got to reunite with his mother again and he realizes that he is luckier than other kids that dont see their mom ever again. I think that jis life in the United States i now better because now he is with his mother.
